“Preserving South Dakota in Pictures” is a new initiative of the South Dakota Heritage Fund to assist the South Dakota State Historical Society catalogue, digitize and provide on-line viewing access to its collection. In order to process the over the 100,000+ collection of photos, the archives has categorized the photos into collections, and prioritized them. The Archives have started the project with the Black Hills Collections. The digitization and cataloging of these images is underway and the images are starting to be uploaded and available on the website "Heritage West," which is sponsored by BCR. More images and collections will be added as they are completed.
The Black Hills Collection was partially funded by the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission and the Black Hills Corporation.
