The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) manages the National Register of Historic Places program of the National Park Service in South Dakota.

The Cultural Heritage Center is open to the public. Coronavirus protections are in place. The museum now offers free admission to South Dakota residents and children from everywhere. Extended summer hours for the museum and gift shop are 9 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4:30 p.m. on Sundays. The State Archives research room is open by appointment only.
