South Dakota State Archives Resources

This collection consists of biographical and miscellaneous subject  materials filed alphabetically by folder title. The Biographical File, housed in file cabinets in the Archives Research Room, is arranged alphabetically by surname. The Vertical File is an older, much larger collection that is housed in the Archives storage area. When using the vertical file remember to check various subject headings for a particular topic.  For example,  terms such as Indian, American Indian, and Native American should all be searched as well as specific subject areas. Likewise, information for a specific reservation may be found under both a former or current reservation name, the Bureau of Indian Affairs agency name, or a town located on that reservation.  An index for each collection is available in the Archives Research Room.
